Google Tel Aviv
Do you recognize this guy in the picture? You probably don’t. That’s Gilad Shalit. For those of you that don’t know, on June 25, 2006, Gilad was kidnapped and captured by Pakistani militants who infiltrated an Israeli army post on the Israeli side of the southern Gaza Strip border after crossing through an underground tunnel. He has been in captivity ever since then.
His kidnapping has become an major international issue over the years, but doesn’t get shown on American television news all that often, if at all. Today, that is hopefully going to change. After five years of being held captive by Hamas, it was just reported that Israel has just struck a deal with Hamas to finally release Gilad in exchange for 1,000 Palestinian prisoners. His family has fought hard over the past five years to bring their son back home. The only signs of life that his family had received were a voice recording sent a year after his capture, along a short note a year later.
Hamas’s holding of Gilad is a violation of international law and all standards of human decency. International humanitarian law absolutely prohibits taking and holding a person by force in order to compel the enemy to meet certain demands, while threatening to harm or kill the person if the demands are not met. Furthermore, hostage-taking is considered a war crime and all those involved bear individual criminal liability. His captors have refused to allow the Red Cross to visit him, have not let him contact his family, and have not provided reliable information on his physical condition.
Today is a day that Gilad’s family, the citizens of Israel, the Jewish people around the world, and those who followed this situation for the past five years have been waiting for.
WELCOME HOME, GILAD!
